Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore foreign migrants’ football participation and identity politics, and to suggest policy directions for social integration.BR Method: Ethnography was conducted on a football club composed of immigrants. Data were collected through participation and nonparticipation observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The collected texts were categorized using thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke (2006).BR Results: Cultural homogeneity due to football globalization and cost/spatial accessibility explained participants’ football participation (motive). The collectivity and liberation of football explained the relationship between their identity politics and football participation. Based on this, the study discussed policy directions such as the introduction of a quota system for foreigners in the local football league, the promotion of league participation of immigrant football clubs, and institutionalization & integrated operation of immigrant sports participation.BR Conclusion: A multicultural sports policy should start by encouraging migrants to participate in sports within the system and respecting their inherent identity. In the same context, this study shows the multicultural characteristics of football and its policy effectiveness.
