Abstract

The article shows how pathological manifestations of the death instinct cause distortions of narcissistic ideals of beauty and have an extremely destructive effect on psychogenesis in adolescence. The eating disorder in this case is seen as a defense against the unbearable horror of absorption and annihilation by the mother’s object. The persecution of the subject by the cruel Superego arises in connection with the intensification of the incestuous attraction and disturbance of triangulation in a situation of family crisis. The need for separation from the mother is dictated by the tasks of development, on the one hand, and on the other hand, femininity frightens with adult desires and opportunities. The motive of sacrifice, manifested through the total rejection of femininity, is also considered as a means of combating incestuous fantasies that underlie the development of anorexia.
