Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the love story line of F. Dostoevsky’s novel “The Idiot”. In the novel, the element of Russian eros found its artistic realization, that was comprehended by the great Russian philosopher N. Berdyaev in his essay “Reflection on Eros” (1940) as an existential category. The mutual love between Myshkin and Nastasya Filippovna was the perfect embodiment of Russian eros: the erotic tension here is fertilized by compassion and mystical experience of soulmates. The tragic ending is predetermined by the fatal incompatibility of the true, rising eros with the reality of earthly world.
