Abstract

Born in Belgium, Father Vincent Lebbe (1877~1940) arrived at China in 1901 as a Vincentian priest. Distinct from most foreign missionaries in China, Father Lebbe did not reveal a sense of racial superiority, and his practice of indigenization thoroughly embodied the local Chinese culture. In consequence of his Catholic Actions in China, Maximum Illud, an apostolic letter issued by Pope Benedict XV, was promulgated in 1919 and a papal envoy was dispatched to China. Father Lebbe, believing the necessities in the advent of a Chinese bishop in the Chinese church with only foreign bishops available, urged the Vatican numerously for support. The Vatican appointed the first Chinese bishop in 1926, and Father Lebbe, who actualized the birth of a Chinese bishop, naturalized as a Chinese in 1927.BR Father Lebbe, who became a Chinese voluntarily, devoted himself to China
