Abstract

This article attempts to discover the assumptions, on which the modern understanding of the identity of the subject, most fully formulated in the works of J. Butler, is based. Using the method of historical analysis, the author of this article refers to seven thinkers (G. W. F. Hegel, F. Nietzsche, Z. Freud, J. Lacan, M. Foucault, L. Althusser, J. Butler), who influenced the contemporary conception of subject's identity, which is used in public discussions today. The discovered backgrounds make it possible to comprehend the disposition in the discussion around the subject’s identity. The target of the study is the history of the contemporary concept of the subject's identity. The scope of the study is the prerequisites of the modern concept of the subject's identity. The relevance of the study is that the discovery of the prerequisites for the contemporary concept of the subject's identity will make it possible to comprehend the current situation in the discussion of the subject's identity. The novelty of the article is that the proposed view on the history of the contemporary conception of the subject's identity is first published.
