Abstract
The article reveals the images of animals in the cycle of stories The Tragic Menagerie (1907) by the writer of the Silver Age L. D. Zinovieva-Annibal (1866–1907) and their role in molding the character of the heroine. These images perform several functions. They establish the environmental discourse of the narrative, shape the moral and philosophical problem range, facilitate the religious self-identification of the main character.

Если трагедия в первом рассказе зафиксировала непримиримое противоречие человека и природы, то в рассказе «Журя» трагедия произошла по вине самой героини, забывшей поставить воду маленькому нескладному журавленку, которого она поселила у себя в теплице. Вера почти идентифицирует себя с мучающимися животными, в то время как фельдшерица кричит: «Зверю лучше, чем человеку, – его можно убивать» (66). Но на самом деле это означает, что она хочет закон добра сделать всемогущим и распространить его на природный мир.
