Abstract

This study examined the practices of drawing activities in kindergartens and childcare centers, and early childhood teachers" difficulties with as well as suggestions for improving drawing activities. Individual interviews were conducted with 10 early childhood teachers. This study found that art activities in kindergartens and childcare centers were conducted in the form of large-group activities, free-choice activities, and child-initiated individual drawing activities. The teachers experienced difficulties in guiding children"s drawing activities due to low interest in art and lack of knowledge about teaching methods. Parents" expectations for high quality artwork aggravated their difficulties. The teachers also expressed concerns related to the use of drawing sheets which may hinder children"s creative development. The teachers expected in-service teacher training to enhance their efficacy in guiding children"s drawing activities. They also expressed the need for diverse art education programs that could be used to promote children"s visual expression of their experiences, feelings, and thoughts through art activities.
