Abstract

The article shows that in throughout different historical epochs, languages have served as became an instrument of "soft power", promoting the interests of this or that state in the world. The main reasons for the emergence of an international language of communication is driven by are historical, political, economic, informational, and linguistic factors. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, we have witnessed the shift of language as a lingua franca. The world society has witnessed the dominance of German and English. The authors analyze the potential of Chinese to become an intermediary language in the international arena at present. It is suggested that despite the interest in the Chinese language, it is nevertheless not in conflict with English; rather it is possible to speak of a peaceful coexistence of several languages of international communication. The foundation for such a linguistic situation in the world is the desire of states to preserve their own linguistic identity and to protect their national interests in the geopolitical arena.
