Abstract

Analyzes the phenomenon of representation, its importance in the complex and contradictory process of formation of national consciousness. It is substantiated that the phenomenon of representation has a wide range of meanings and is a necessary stage in cognition, organically connected with thinking, memory, and imagination. A representation can be adequate to reality and at the same time to reality and, at the same time, imaginary, having all the signs of illusion. In this regard, in the section the semantics of the terms imagination, imaginary, and representation are clarified. The terms are defined as terms of the same root semantically differ from each other and, at the same time, are components of a single hermeneutical circle. A comparative analysis of representation in the fields of natural science and social sciences. It is noted that even scientific realities are a product of representation. They are not possible as something absolutely complete and objective. The article is ubiquitous and mandatory as an approach to the real, objective. This is characteristic of both natural and social sciences. Awareness of the real is impossible without the imaginary. The main focus of the section is on the argumentation of the importance of the historical component, historical ideas in the modern realities of national self-identification and consolidation. In this field, the phenomenon of representation is even more complex and polysemantic than in natural science. In this regard, the section analyzes the “conflict of interpretations” of the facts of the past, as a phenomenon extremely common in modern historiography. In general, it is concluded that representation is a universal prerequisite for realizing the real (objective) both in natural science and in socio-humanities.
