Abstract

Although they do not hold the highest place among the courts of general jurisdiction, justices of the peace play a crucial role in ensuring the functioning of the entire judicial system of the Russian Federation. Therefore, creating favorable conditions for their professional activities is an important task of the state. This study aims to identify measures to reduce the workload of justices of the peace. Doing so will improve the quality of justice and ensure that court cases are considered within reasonable timeframes. The author suggests addressing this issue by changing the competence of justices of the peace in civil and administrative proceedings, as well as in cases of administrative offenses, and delegating some of their powers to state executive bodies. Furthermore, it is proven that transferring criminal cases of private prosecution to the private-public category would optimize the work of justices of the peace.
