Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the influences of types of table tennis grips on the technique effectiveness and the competition performance. For the purpose, this study selected two Olympic Men’s Table Tennis Gold Medallists who use the Sake Hand Grip and Penhold Grip respectively and collected and analyzed the video of 20 table tennis games of each player, resulting in analyzing a total of 40 games and 186 sets.BR The results showed that first, there was no statistically significant difference in the technique effectiveness by grip types in both the first and the third stroke, both the second and the fourth stroke, and strokes after the fourth stroke.BR Second, there was no statistically significant difference in the competition performance by grip types. However, correlation analysis showed that the technique effectiveness of Sake Hand Grip and Pen Holder Grip affects the competition performance. These findings indicated that both players as world class players have been trained to take full advantages of their own grip style as much as possible. Especially the players of the pen holder grip need to have the completeness of the overall technique than do the players of the Sake hand grip to, increase the likelihood of winning the game.
