Abstract

This review summarizes the literature data on a specific group of newborns, “early term”, according to the current classification of newborns based on the gestational age at birth. It is shown that infants born early in a full-term pregnancy (37–38 weeks) have significant risks for survival and further development as compared with the “full-term” group. Particular attention is paid to the causes of early-term birth in the context of the optimal gestational age in a normal pregnancy. In addition, recommendations for the practical management of early-term infants are presented, as well as preventive measures aimed at reducing iatrogenic causes of early-term birth. Key words: full-term infants, early-term birth, early-term newborns, neonatal mortality, neonatal morbidity, infant mortality
