Abstract

This study explores in-depth how college students establish a sense of self-identity through participation in coaching. The subjects were college students who participated more than four consecutive times in coaching to find what their motive was in participating in coaching throughout their college life. The study explored how they established a sense of self-identity through coaching from the approach method of grounded theory. As a result, the college students participated in coaching to resolve various difficulties and problems caused by college life and through coaching they experienced a systematic self-exploration process with the coach who is their own supporter. Through the self-exploration process, the college students discovered the ‘real me’ and earned answers such as who am I, where do I want to go and experienced the establishment of a sense of self-identity. Thus, it can be seen that the establishment of self-identity of college students is strengthened through coaching and has a positive effect on career identity and on adjustment in college life.
