Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study is to develop and apply a self-esteem improvement program for elementary school students, and to explore its moral educational significance.
 Methods This study operated a self-esteem improvement program for 226 students in the 3rd to 5th grades of elementary school and derived its significance through t-test. In addition, it was intended to clarify the significance of moral education through this.
 Results The self-esteem improvement program for 3rd to 5th graders generally produced significant results. However, more research is needed to ensure that self-esteem leads to respect for others. In order for the self- esteem improvement program to be significantly operated, it is essential to secure a stable and continuous number of classes. In addition, an authorized curriculum is needed to improve self-esteem. As moral subjects are the backbone of students' personality education and democratic citizenship education, it is necessary to study education to improve self-reliance and field-oriented education methods that can be expanded to respect others.
 Conclusions The self-esteem improvement program for elementary school students conducted through this study generally provided meaningful experiences to students. In order for such a significant self-esteem program to be generalized to the school field, a stable curriculum based on the number of classes is needed, and it is suggested to solve this problem through moral subjects that are the center of students' personality education and democratic citizenship education.
