Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to identify the effects of leisure participation period, frequency, and intensity on recreation specialization and serious leisure and to investigate the relationships between recreation specialization and serious leisure in the context of skiing. A total of 374 skiers from four different ski resorts located in Kyongki and kangwon provinces participated in the current study. The subjects were selected using the cluster random sampling method. The simple and multiple regression analyses were employed using SPSS 15.0 version. The findings were as follows: First, participation period and frequency of skiers had positive effects on recreation specialization. Second, participation period and frequency of skiers had positive influences on serious leisure. Third, recreation specialization and serious leisure positively influenced each other. However, the effect of serious leisure on recreation specialization was quite greater than the effect of recreation specialization on serious leisure. The present study might be useful data to understand better the concepts of recreation specialization and serious leisure, and the relationships between the levels of participation and recreation specialization and serious leisure.
