Abstract

The aim of the work is to identify the functional purpose of religious constants in creating a foreign image in Russian literature of the XIX century. “Muslim” constants in the works of M. I. Nevzorov, P. P. Svinin, T. S. Belyaev, P. M. Kudryashev are considered; confessional codifiers in the work of F. M. Dostoevsky (“Notes from the House of the Dead”) and the mythologemes of religious pre-Christian consciousness in the works of N. D. Teleshov (“Dry Trouble”) and N. S. Leskov (“The Enchanted Wanderer”) are analysed. The scientific novelty of the work lies in studying the specifics of the purpose of religious constants, which convey the idea of “foreign culture” as fully as possible, both in the content and poetic aspects, in the analysis of poetics means in the artistic creation of an ethnic image. As a result of the study, we come to the following conclusion: in the creation of a foreign image, both confessional religious and pre-Christian pagan constants are dominant in the works of the writers under consideration, conveying the essence and identity of non-Russian phenomena of the large Russian world. The forms of confessional components textualization in the creation of a foreign image are different: they are presented in such variants of retranslation as a description of the place of worship of Muslims, individual Koranic constants, Muslim epigraphic inscriptions and a prayer text in the ideological and artistic system of works; religious holidays of different faiths and gospel, Koranic, Old Testament reminiscences; dominant mythologems of pre-Christian religious consciousness.
