Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the economic consequences of the spread of the coronavirus infection COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 on the functioning of the world economy. The outbreak of the first cases of SARS among residents of the city of Wuhan in the Chinese province of Hubei in December 2019 caused an exponential rate of spread of the new virus across the planet and a shock in all markets. The economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic has affected all spheres of life of the world's population. Social distancing, forced self-isolation, quarantine measures and other measures taken by the political leadership of the countries to combat the dangerous disease have plunged the world economy into a global recession. Major global companies, as well as medium and small businesses, have also suffered. The most affected sectors of the economy are: financial markets and banks, trade in non-food products, the education system, the tourism industry, air transportation, the hotel business, catering, the business events industry, the organization of conferences and exhibitions, the leisure and entertainment industry, sports and recreation activities and sports, etc. Statistics on the number of cases of coronavirus, recovered and died from it indicate the deepening of the global economic crisis. As of March 15, 2021 the number of cases of coronavirus in all countries is 119874650 people (+ 191242 over the past day); the number of deaths – 2653644 people (4356 over the past day); the number of recovered – 75640613 (+ 102831 for the last days). According to analysts, the negative processes in the world economy can continue for several years to come.
