Abstract

The characteristics of the ice cover in the northern part of the Caspian Sea are simulated using the CICE model. The general structure of the model and the experience of its operational application in leading forecast centers are described. Calculations of the ice cover characteristics in the northern Caspian Sea for four winter seasons (October–March) in 2005–2009 are performed. The values of ice concentration and ice thickness are calculated. The comparison of the calculation results with observational data showed that the model satisfactorily reproduces the processes of ice build-up and melting. Keywords: Caspian Sea, ice cover, CICE model, ice concentration and ice thickness
