Abstract

The article identifies genre forms of L. N. Tolstoy’s epistolary dialogues with writers during the 1850-1870s. Analysing artistic peculiarities of the epistolary material, the authors identify the basic genre-formative factors: the communicants’ interrelations, chronology of letters and their style. The presented epistolary dialogues differ in their artistic merit and style. Most of them refer to the epistolary genre (business or friendly correspondence) but long-term artistically valuable correspondence has the features of an epistolary novel, for example, friendly correspondence with A. A. Fet and intellectual-psychological - with N. N. Strakhov.
