Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the acoustic features of Korean and Ukrainian consonants so as to propose a practical transliteration of Korean consonants for Ukrainian learners. To this end, previous studies were examined concerning how Korean and Ukrainian consonants' pronunciations were written. In order to compare the acoustic features of Korean and Ukrainian consonants, the phonetic characteristics of Korean consonants – which are presented in prior research – have been summarized. Next, the Ukrainian utterance data were analyzed in order to measure the acoustic quality of each consonant. Based on the results of this analysis, phonetic transliterations of Korean consonants in Ukrainian were proposed. 'ㄴ, ㅁ, ㄹ' were similar to Ukrainian ‘Н, М, Р/Л’ with acoustic characteristics. 'ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ' correspond to Ukrainian voiced ‘Ґ, Д, Б’, while 'ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ' correspond to Ukrainian voiceless ‘К, Т, П’. However, there were no Ukrainian consonants that correspond to the pronunciation of the Korean aspirated ' ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ' and a tensed fricative 'ㅆ'. The affricative 'ㅈ, ㅉ, ㅊ' corresponded to Ukrainian 'ДЖ, Ц/ДЗ, Ч', respectively.(South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky)
