Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore psychological changes of people with acquireddisability. Semi-structured interviews were done for five participants and the data were analyzedusing Giorgi’s phenomenological method. As a result, fear at death’s door, and pain andsuffering in rehabilitation were found at the time of acquiring disability. As time went by, theycommonly experienced hopelessness, sadness, and depression in the process of adaptation andre-socialization due to social discrimination. Furthermore, these feelings were heighten overtime. Finally, they overcame these feelings due to redefined relationships and roles. They alsosaid high level of self-confidence, self-esteem, and psychological growth were achieved. Thefindings suggests that different interventions were needed for people with acquired disabilitydepending on their psychological changes.
