Abstract

The research aims to identify the structural and content-related characteristics of the MILITARY MAN associative field in the non-professional Russian linguistic consciousness from a gender viewpoint. Using the results of an associative experiment, the paper presents an attempt to construct the gender-specific versions of the associative field under consideration that reflect its core and periphery structure and the thematic framework. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the fact that the developed men’s and women’s models of the MILITARY MAN associative field were subjected to a comparative analysis, which became the basis for conclusions about the influence of the gender factor on the formation of the associative-verbal network. By analysing the respondents’ reactions, the main semantic zones of the MILITARY MAN associative field were identified, each of which was divided into thematic groups, with their content considered separately for each gender group. As a result, it has been determined that the gender-based versions of the studied associative field contain both common reactions, which reflect the general image of the MILITARY MAN in the Russian linguistic consciousness, and gender-specific reactions, which represent the distinctive features of this image in the male and female linguistic consciousness.
