Abstract
This study was to synthesize the experience of failed assisted reproductive technique in infertile couples using the qualitative meta-synthesis method. Six qualitative studies on the experience of failed assisted reproductive technique in infertile couples were compared by searching eight Korean and English databases. Selected studies were synthesized through meta-synthesis proposed by Sandelowski and Barroso (2003). Five themes were derived through meta-synthesis: “Physical pain”, “Emotional pain”, “Relationship breakdown”, “Need for support”, and “Hope”. The infertile couple who experienced the failure of assisted reproductive technique experienced various pains and destruction of their relationship, and they felt the need for support, but they were on a journey of suffering that could not stop their efforts toward the good fortune of a pregnancy that could not be caught. Conclusion: Through this study, we were able to have a deeper understanding of the experiences of infertile couples who failed assisted reproductive technique, and it will be helpful to prepare various and effective support strategies for them.
