Abstract

The article analyzes the counterfeit banknotes number growth rate, the monetary policy aimed at improving the protective elements of banknotes, the level of counterfeiting crimes detection, and the impact of counterfeiting on the Russian economic security. The purpose of the article is to analyze the growth of cash circulation level and available methods for detecting counterfeit banknotes, as well as to determine the most relevant protective elements. The author uses the statistical data of the Central Bank of Russia on the amount of cash in circulation and counterfeit banknotes, as well as statistical data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on the number of crimes committed under the Article 186 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The research can have a positive impact on the functioning of cash in general and become a basis for creating a unified information platform for the recognition of counterfeit banknotes, which will have a positive impact on the fight against counterfeiting and ensuring Russia’s economic security.
