Abstract

Social workers are always busy causing to complex and multiple clients’needs. But it is necessary that social workers reflect their self and use of self as the methods of service provision. This study examines Korean social workers’self and use of self, among social workers who were working in Chicago Area, to explore basic data for the necessity of self reflection. First, literature review about use of self was studied. Through the purposive sampling, 8 different Korean immigrant social workers were selected. Data were collected with individual in-depth interviews with more than 2 hours for each. Data were analyzed by subject analysis with coding and finding concepts, sub-categories, and categories. Whole subject was introduced in the end of the result. As the result, 57 concepts, 17 sub-categories, and 6 category turned out as the Korean social workers’use of self. First category was “in born characters led and kept them as social worker”. Second category was “connecting real experience continuously with recognitions”. Third category was “productive utilization with resource and skills”. Fourth category was “keeping on concerns for growth of themselves and the agency they work for”. Fifth category was “using the means that can encourage and recharge”. Last category was “preparation for present self connecting to the future self”. Based on the result, necessity of reflecting in born and experimental effect, religion/multiple relations, neighboring resources, cultural competences based practice, systematization for reflecting themselves and sharing individual and agency concerns, recognizing and fulfillment of self-care methods were suggested.
