Abstract

This study is an exploratory study on social workers’ application of practical perspectives. The purpose of this study was to obtain the implications necessary to improve the competencies of social workers by identifying their understanding and practical experience of the eco-system perspective and strengths perspectives. Data were collected from 8 practitioners through focus group interviews. The research results are as follows; 6 themes from the eco-system perspective are ‘person in the environment’, ‘environment as a source of resources and problem’, ‘assessing client and the environment all inclusive’, ‘the purpose which is connecting with client and environment’, ‘intervention process which is including the environment’, ‘having difficulties’, 10 themes from strengths perspective are ‘respect for client’s initiative in life’, ‘having the ability and potentiality’, ‘focusing on the positive’, ‘from the client’, ‘practice process based on client’s capabilities’, ‘empowerment’, ‘working with clients’, ‘change of clients’, ‘change of social workers’, ‘having difficulties’, and 2 themes from the necessary to apply both two perspectives are ‘institutional efforts’, ‘learning and training’. Based on these results, proposals are presented to apply the two perspectives to practice and strengthen social work practice expertise.
