Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of retirement-related variables and satisfaction with family relationships on life satisfaction after retirement and to assess the gender differences in the relationship between these variables. Using the 7th wave of Korean Panel of Retirement and Income Study(KReIS), the sample included 539 men and 1,164 women aged 55~74 years who selected ‘retired’ as their occupational status. The results were as follows: First, voluntary retirement had a positive effect on retirement satisfaction among both men and women, but economic preparation for later life was statistically significant in women. Second, satisfaction with family relationships significantly influenced retirement satisfaction in both men and women. Based on gender differences, these findings suggested the future direction of the social welfare policy and practice to increase life satisfaction after retirement among middle-aged and older adults. It is necessary to promote educational programs that prepare them for adaptation to later life, which can contribute to the improvement of retirement satisfaction.
