Abstract

This study surveyed Korean consumers and analysed their acceptance of unethical and illegal news coverage methods of investigative journalism. While consumers recognized that investigative news played two roles of monitoring society and providing information, they were generally negative about unethical and illegal methods. Consumers thought that freedom of press was not absolute. Consumers’ idea of freedom of news coverage was changed by news coverage methods and report aims from the extremely limited to the constitutional basic right. If consumer valued the role of social monitoring highly, he considered news coverage methods justly and if he valued information provision highly, he considered them unjustly. Usage of investigative news had positive effects on many coverage methods, which meant that consumers were generally satisfied with investigative news. Women allowed coverage methods more than men. The lower the age and the educational background were, and the higher the income were, the coverage methods were more justified. Usage of environment and health news had positive effects on coverage, but usage of education, government and crime news did negative effects.
