Abstract

The purpose of this study was to exams the effect of aerobic ex ercise on bone mineral density, bone metabolism related hormones and fitness in osteopenic and obese women. In order to compare those factors 12 weeks of aerobic exercise was performed and the subjects were assinged to osteopenic and obese group (OOG, n=18), and osteopenic group (OG, n=13). Bone mineral dens ity, bone metabolism related hormones (osteocalcine, calsitonine, PTH, calcium), and fitness (muscle strength, balance, flexibility) were measured and compared before and after 12 weeks of exercise programs. In res ults, bone mineral density showed no significant differences in both groups, and group difference was not significant between the 2 groups. Osteocalcine, PTH showed significant differences in OOG, and osteocalsi ne, calcium showed significant differences in OG after 12 weeks of exercise. Also, osteocalsine showed significant difference between the 2 group.. Muscle strength, balance, and flexibility showed significant differences after 12 weeks of exercise and group, and flexibility showed significant difference between the 2 groups. These results indicate that aerobic exercise is not able to enhance bone mineral density in osteopenic and obese po pulation. However, bone mineral related hormones and fitness level are improved after 12 weeks of aerobic exercise. Also, existence of osteopenia and obese are not showed consistent differences between the 2 groups.
