Abstract

When ammonia is exposed to the environment, it could cause serious environmental pollution such as eutrophication, soil acidification, and micro particle matters in the air. So it need to be treated not to be discharged into the environment. In this study, Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) known to have selective adsorption properties for ammonia ions were synthesized and the surface characteristics of each material were evaluated and it were tested on ammonium adsorbing behavior. The presence of C≡N was confirmed through XRD and FT-IR analysis of four types of PBAs (Zinc Hexacyanoferrate, Copper Hexacyanoferrate, Nikel Hexacyanoferrate, Cobalt Hexacyanoferrate), and the structure of the cubic form was observed through SEM analysis. The maximum adsorption amount (qm) of each PBAs particle was Zn HCF 43.68 mg/g, CuHCF 42.55 mg/g, NiHCF 41.89 mg/g, and CoHCF 27.71 mg/g. The adsorption reaction between the PBAs particles and ammonium ions was mostly performed within 10 min. The adsorption effect on pH was evaluated, and it showed almost constant adsorption in the pH range of 5 to 8. Adsorption selectivity of ammonia ions and four cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) was tested in each PBAs, and ZnHCF showed high selectivity of Na+ 73.9%, K+ 38.9%, Ca2+ 78.1% and Mg2+ 83.1% compared to solution with only ammonium ion. It is possible to recover the ammonium in the adsorbent solution and the concentrated ammonium solution.
