Abstract

The author of the article refers to the epic essence of Turgenev’s novel «Virgin soil» and proves that the genre definition of «public novel» in its standard sense does not convey the entire depth of the work. The problem of the «character» of the novel and the accuracy of Turgenev’s characteristics of the populist movement is considered in terms of the organization of the present by Turgenev as an epic time and an illustration of the possibility of combining the general (national) and the personal. The work shows that each of the characters of the novel is measured by an epic, folk measure – the ability to work and proximity to the land.
