Abstract

The article considers the possibility of using the onomasiological approach to studying the semantics of prepositions, which is considered as a type of relation established by a preposition in conjunction with the features of the relation participants. The author analyses the conditions for choosing the German prepositions to represent the extra-linguistic situation “Position on the Water and on the Land”. The acquired data are compared with the data obtained when studying prepositions representing the situation “The Image on the Surface”. Variation mechanisms within prepositional semantics and preposition variation mechanisms are described.
