Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the usage of adverbs in spoken discourse in accordance with formal/informal registers. To this end, a reference corpus of 304,019 word segments for formal spoken Korean and 484,730 word segments of informal spoken Korean were comprised and the frequency of 682 adverbs was analyzed. In addition, we verified the statistical significance of frequency differences in the reference corpus using G² values. The study thus presents the G² values and degrees of 279 adverbs excluding 403 adverbs that were either not included in the corpus or showed abnormal values. Moreover, we discussed ways to utilize the results presented in this study in teaching and evaluating the usage of Korean adverbs.
