Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how Korean and Chinese Learners as well as Korean professors perceive issues related to EMI and ELF. A total of 274 non-native speakers of English (Korean and Chinese college and graduate students along with Korean professors) completed an offline or online questionnaire consisting of three parts: how confident they feel in their English, how they think about EMI classes, and whether they prefer to learn in Standard English or World Englishes. SPSS statistics was used for data analysis. The findings of data analysis showed the following findings: first, all three groups had low confidence in English, but Chinese students had significantly higher confidence in their English pronunciation than Korean students and professors. Second, in most of the questions, it was found that Chinese students felt more strongly about the need for EMI. Third, Chinese students had a high perception of necessity of EMI and importance of pronunciation, and Korean students were intermediate in their perceptions of EMI between the highly EMI-focused Chinese students and the EMI-skeptical Korean professors.
