Abstract

The article considers the role of antonymy as a means to create contrast in A. I. Kuprin’s stories. The types of antonyms used by the writer and their functions are described, examples of between-parts-of-speech antonymy are provided. Stylistic devices based on antonymy are examined. The analysis has identified that the author’s individual style involves contrastive description of artistic reality; the stories are filled with oppositions based on linguistic and contextual antonymy. The writer turns to both verbally pronounced antonymy and “flawed” antonymic pairs, complex antithesis predominates.
