Abstract

The challenging task for a teacher nowadays is to help students prepare for real world interaction in a foreign language. Therefore, the choice of proper methodological approach that not only enables students to attain some general educational and research goals, but also engages students in a variety of cognitive and linguistic tasks is of paramount importance. The article proceeds from the assumption that involving students into debates is one of the ways to create productive EFL learning environment and maximize students’ achievements. In addition to providing meaningful listening, speaking practice, debates are also highly effective for developing argumentation skills for persuasive speech. The purpose of the article is to present the rationale behind using debate in EFL classes and provide a step-by-step guide that will give teachers everything they need to know for conducting debate in an English class. The authors hope that the contribution to the subject of developing speaking skills can give those interested in this expanding area of teaching an alternative perspective to consider as well as enhance professional competence.
