Abstract

Archetypes, handed down from ancient times, are ideological signs symbolically schematizing the principle of creation of all things in the universe, and abstract forms based on human intuition about the invisible world, such as the flow of energy. The graphic art of the talisman holds these symbolic graphics as an outstanding form of creative art, as all creative activities are also the result of the creations of artists' imaginations and the visualization of an invisible world. As a creative formative language, the talisman establishes a unique formative language system consisting of various symbolic graphics. They are a complex of visual symbols with various meanings that visualize the definitions of seeking harmony and balance in human life, with an integrated characteristic in which symbolic meaning is further enhanced by various intertwined combinations rather than the meaning of a single symbol. It is necessary to consider what type of formative work has been performed with regard to the talisman in terms of the ‘implementation of symbolism or the establishment of abstraction’ in the graphics of the talisman. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to undertake a close examination of the formative principles of the symbolism and abstraction of the graphic symbols of the talisman. Talisman graphics as symbols and abstractions are visual materials with strong potential to be reborn as richer complex symbols in our visual culture due to the infinite variety of open interpretations. Using our imagination and creativity, another creative formative interpretation of polysemous abstract graphics may be possible through the new challenge of bringing the graphic images of the talisman into today's visual communication arena. The formative signification of talisman graphics will be discussed in more detail in subsequent studies.
