Abstract

The article aims to identify the role of fortifications in the process of Russia’s assertion in the North Caucasus at the end of the XVIII - in the first half of the XIX century. Initially the fortifications were constructed for defence and played an important role protecting the Russian resettlers, peaceful mountaineers from hostile forays, providing transportation security. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the fortifications are considered within the system of interaction of the Russian authorities and the local population. The research findings are as follows: with the spread of the Russian influence in the North-Caucasian region, the fortifications became key factors in restoration of urban life, trade development, laying foundation for peace in the Caucasus region.
