Abstract

The article for the first time examines in detail the Tatar mullahs’ missionary activity, forms and methods of propagating Islam among the baptized Tatars and neighbouring peoples (the Chuvash people, Mordvins, Mari, etc.). The paper provides illustrative examples of the clergy’s missionary activity in the context of the Russian Empire’s confessional policy. Relying on archival documents, the author explains the phenomenon of successful missionary activity of the Tatar Muslim clergy and their followers in the Middle Volga region and shows how, overcoming legislative and administrative obstacles, they successfully competed with the Orthodox clergy and achieved significant results.
