Abstract

The paper aims to consider the ways of explication of author’s modality in a literary text by the example of a poetic text analysis, namely R. Kipling’s poem “If”. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it makes an attempt to study the ways of language representation of author’s modality (R. Kipling’s author’s position) in a poetic text. The originality is also determined by the low level of knowledge of textual modality compared to linguistic modality that is sentence modality. As a result, it has been identified that textual modality defined by the authors of the article (after I. R. Galperin) as a variant of subjective modality is explicated in the poem at all the text organization levels - lexical-grammatical, morphological, syntactic, phonological.
