Abstract
The article reveals the contribution of V. M. Kostarchuk (1918 - 2001); rector (1955 - 1982) of T.G. Shevchenko Chernihiv State Pedagogical Institute in the formation and development of this educational institution; as well as in the development of mathematical; in particular algebraic education; for students of Physics and Mathematics departments of Ukraine’s higher pedagogical educational institutions of the 60s; XX – the beginning of the XXI century. In particular; attention was focused on biographical information about V. M. Kostarchuk; the Zhytomyr period (1948 - 1955) and the Chernihiv period of his activity (1955-2001) were analysed. It has been stated that in the Zhytomyr period; Viktor Mykolayovych’s teaching range expanded; assistant work grew into independent course teaching; and his lecturing and pedagogical maturity grew. It has been proved that the Chernihiv period of his activity became decisive for the scientist. After all; it was the time when Chernihiv teachers’ training institute was transformed into a pedagogical one; which required a lot of effort – physical; mental; moral; psychological; emotional and others. A training base was created; qualified teaching staff was selected; training; scientific-methodological; organizational-educational work was arranged. It has been found out that in 1959-1962 new departments were organized; in particular; Departments of Higher Mathematics; Mathematics and its teaching methods; Physics and General technical disciplines; Pedagogy and Primary education methods. It has been stressed that the largest in the institute became the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics where teachers of Mathematics; Physics; Electrical engineering and general technical disciplines were taught. V.M. Kostarchuk’s significant contribution into the modernization of the content of mathematical and; in particular; algebraic education for students of higher pedagogical educational institutions; as well as for elective classes in Mathematics for a comprehensive school. His manual “Mathematics. A manual for elective classes in grade 8” was the first manual in Ukraine in the new mathematical teaching of pupils at that time. The information on textbooks on Algebra has been presented; with a focus on the modernization of algebraic education for students at physical and mathematical faculties of pedagogical institutes and on the increase in algebraic education of secondary school teachers.
