Abstract

The article considers the issue of the main railway transport corridors formation on the territory of the Russian Empire in the direction of the Black Sea. The history of the railways construction in the Black Sea direction is inextricably linked with the history of the emergence of railroads in Russia. The first railway project to Feodosia was approved as a part of the first network in 1857, but due to financial difficulties, it was not destined to be realized. The issue of building a railway had two sides: a strategic one, the need for which was directly demonstrated after the failures of the Crimean War; and trade - the Black Sea has historically been the most important trade corridor between Asia and Europe. Later, by the beginning of the 20th century. the railway to the Black Sea was nevertheless built in five main directions: Azov (Taganrog), Odessa, Crimean (Sevastopol), Transcaucasian (Poti) and Novorossiysk directions.
