Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching contents of a circle dealt with in an elementary mathematics textbook and to suggest an effective direction for teaching a circle. Through a longitudinal research, we analyze Korea's secondary curriculum up to 2015 revised curriculum. To a cross-sectional research, we compare and analyze recently published textbooks of Korea (1 type), Japan (4 types) and Singapore (2 types). Based on these findings, we suggest that math educators consider the following three points. First, it is necessary to raise the learning order of the center, radius, and diameter of the circle components. Second, it should be enhanced by the times when students use compass to draw circles. Lastly, in addition to the circles, the semi-circle and quarter-circle concepts need to be reflected in the curriculum.
