Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of horticultural therapy program for improving social and emotional development in the disabled children at a residential facility. A total of 16 disabled children at W residential facility were participated in this study. The horticultural therapy program was conducted from March to June, 2012 and it was a total of 15 sessions(once a week). To investigate the effects of social and emotional development in the disabled children, the social and emotional development scale was used before and after the program. The 16 disabled children who participated in the horticultural therapy program significantly improved two variables such as interaction with teachers and independence in the social and emotional development scale(p<0.05). Finally, this study showed a possibility of horticultural therapy program for improving social and emotional development in the disabled children at a residential facility. Providing continuous horticultural therapy program is needed to improve the social and emotional development of disabled children.
