Abstract

Purpose. To describe the etiology, pathogenesis and to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method of surgical treatment of retinal detachment in the optic nerve disc pit. Material and methods. In total, 15 patients (16 eyes) with a pit of the optic nerve disc complicated by retinal detachment were operated. Results. In 11 of 15 patients (73% of cases) hydrocephalus was detected according to computer tomography of the brain. According to the OCT of high resolution a complete resorption of the subretinal fluid occurred in all patients one year after the operation. Conclusion. A causal relationship between the fossa in the optic disc, development of retinal detachments, hydrocephalus was defined. The cause of development of retinal detachment in the optic disc pit is an increase in intracranial pressure, which is determined using the CT of the brain. A new method of surgical treatment of the complicated pit of the optic nerve disc is developed – local removal of the ILM, leading to a complete functional rehabilitation of patients.
