Abstract

The authors provide a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the state of the modern book market and book trade in Russia, and also identify the main trends in their future development based on statistical data over the past 12 years. Based on the results of the study, the authors made a number of conclusions: 1) a book is a specific product, which is the result of intellectual work and is designed to satisfy the non-material (spiritual) needs of the population; in the context of digitalization, the book acquires a digital format; 2) the structure of consumer demand is changing in favor of digital books and so-called intellectual literature (non-fiction); 3) the Russian book market at the present stage of its development is undergoing, on the one hand, a significant revival, on the other hand, a stage of another transformation, which was initiated by the geopolitical context, and the change in the position of the book in the world of modern culture, and the expansion of genre diversity, and the formation of a new readership request in new realities; 4) the share of non-market sales channels tends to decrease both in value and share terms; 5) bookstores remain the main market channel for book distribution with an increasing share of online trade; 6) in the book trade in recent years, there has been an increase in the processes of integration (formation and strengthening of the positions of book retail chains) and concentration (concentration of book chains in megacities). Data from the Federal State Statistics Service, as well as data from the annual industry reports of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications “Russian Book Market. Status, trends and prospects” from 2018 to 2023. As research methods, the authors used classical methods of analysis and synthesis, structuring, theoretical generalization and comparison.
