Abstract

In the recent years, the demand for Chinese medical coordinators in the Korean market has increased due to the highest percentage of Chinese tourists among all foreign tourists visiting Korea for medical treatment. Therefore, the author believes that it is necessary to provide professional Korean language education for Chinese learners who want to pursue this career. Unlike general language education, it is important to educate the vocabulary of medical terminology in consideration of the professional nature of international medical tour coordinators. However, most of the studies so far have focused on the analysis of existing teaching materials and the selection of terminology, and few of them have actually proposed a practical vocabulary education curriculum. Therefore, this study focuses on the provision of Chinese medical coordinators for the Korean market and designs a vocabulary education program for Chinese international medical coordinators with the aim of improving their professional competence. In addition, this study selected plastic surgery, dermatology, and aesthetics, which are most frequently visited by Chinese tourists, and refined vocabulary related to these fields based on existing research. In order to use these vocabularies, a Lexical Approach was used, which was combined with a chunk of vocabulary. Moreover, in the Lexical Approach, we simulated the actual situation of a medical coordinator in the field, as a bridge between a doctor and a patient, who needs to understand the real situation of the patient and communicate the meaning of both sides. The proposed lexical education program in this study helps learners to adapt to the practice in advance and improve their Korean language skills and professionalism as international medical coordinators.
