Abstract

The aim of this article is to define to what degree past forms of perfective verbs are compatible with iteration marks. For this purpose we will deal not only with such iteration marks as dva raza, pjat’ raz, but also with ones such as často, inogda et cetera. The first part of this article will deal with combinations of iteration marks such as často with a past perfective form and provide an overview of all possible realizations for these kinds of syntactic constructions. The second part will deal with the question of the specific semantic value known as ‘summarnoe značenie’ (‘summative meaning’) which is one of the possible values of the past perfective. We will show that features such as briefness of the process, a lack of wide temporal intervals between two phases or consecutiveness are not compulsory conditions for the employment of these schemes. From all these facts we will draw the conclusion that past perfective forms can represent a repeated process more often than has been assumed up to now. Moreover, the fact that an iterative phrase like vo vsex slučajax (lit. ‘in all the cases’), combines with past perfective forms without any restrictions, allows us to draw the conclusion that the notion of ‘summarnoe značenie’ is not a sufficient explanation.
