Abstract

The study aims to develop a classification of syntactic parallelism of Tang quatrains containing five syllables in a line according to the direction of parallel fragments. Syntactic parallelism of such works can be: 1) partially vertical; 2) completely vertical; 3) horizontal; 4) both vertical and horizontal; 5) zero. The study is novel in that it applies an old method (immediate constituents analysis) to new material, i.e. selected Tang quatrains containing five characters in each line. As a result of the study, the researcher is able to classify any Tang poems by the percentage of parallel fragments of the total number of characters in the poem.
