Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a basic research on the current situation of care work and support needs of caregivers of children and adolescents with childhood cancer through in-depth interviews, a qualitative research method. Specifically, we conducted in-depth interviews with 12 caregivers of children and adolescents with pediatric cancer. We collected and analyzed qualitative data by asking them to fill out a daily(weekday and weekend) caregiving time and content survey questionnaire. The study showed the following results. First, the current care work status of caregivers of childhood cancer patients presented information on 1) care work intensity, 2) employment status of caregivers, 3) support network for care work, 4) care work-related costs and use of facilities to reduce the burden of care work, 5) perception of care work, 6) perception on obstacles in care work, 7) impact of excessive care work, and 8) status of daily time spent on care work and its content. Second, the results on the support needs of caregivers for care work revealed necessity to expand the social system and social support network in order to alleviate the burden of care work. Finally, we conclude with implications and suggestions for further research based on these findings.
